Home
The first time I visited our property, I felt like I had finally come Home.
It was 2021, in the earliest Spring, and as I drove up to Aquinnah, I felt a deep sense of calm; the ocean coming into view on my left- the Gay Head lighthouse ahead, its steady light calling to me. It feels a little like reaching the end of the world when you get to that spot- You can loop around and come back down island, but the cliffs are as far as you can go.
I turned onto Lighthouse Rd, past the Outermost Inn, into our driveway and through the opening in our stone wall and when you pull into our property you are quite suddenly enveloped by the space and its simple, enchanting beauty. In my mind I saw parts of my future- the farm animals foraging about, my son riding his bike, my husband on the tractor with a load of wood to stack, me in the garden pulling weeds up, all of us fixing up the house over time. It was clear that this was a place you could put roots down, in every sense. Most often, when people visit here, they tell me they feel some version of what I felt, and what I still feel each time I pull in.
